at the Trails around Frick and Hodge Ponds
(9 miles northeast of downtown Livingston Manor)
The Willowemoc Trail Crew (WTC) will be offering you an opportunity to learn basic trail maintenance techniques and to apply those techniques to the trails around Frick and Hodge Ponds. On Sunday, August 25, the WTC will sponsor two work sessions to help improve the hiking experience on the Quick Lake Trail, Loggers loop and Flynn Trail. Participants will meet at 1:00 PM at the Frick Pond parking Area at the end of Beech Mountain Road. Participants should bring work gloves and loppers if they have them. Other tools will be supplied.
Opportunity #1: Hike out to Frick Pond on the Quick Lake Trail and continue along the west side of the pond. Trim branches that are hanging into the trail and pick up branches that are lying in the trail. At Iron Wheel Junction, turn right on Logger’s Loop and continue trimming and cleaning up branches to Times Square. Return to the parking area on the Loggers Loop and Quick lake trails. Hiking mileage: 3.7 Approximate time: 2.5 hours depending on hiking speed and work needed
Opportunity #2: Hike out to Frick Pond on the Quick Lake Trail and continue along the west side of the pond. Remove any blowdowns and large branches interfering with hiking the trail. At Iron Wheel Junction, turn left to stay on the Quick Lake Trail. Continue to remove blowdowns and large branches. At Junkyard Junction, turn right on the Flynn Trail. Remove branches on the trail and lop and trim branches interfering with hiking the trail. At Hodge Pond, continue on the Flynn Trail along the west side of Hodge Pond and up the hill. Lop and trim branches to the junction with the Big Rock Trail. Return to the parking area on the Flynn Trail. Hiking mileage: 6.3 Approximate time: 4 hours depending on hiking speed and work needed
Either opportunity can be modified to fit the needs of the participants.
